Children’s Ministry by Judy N. Comstock

Judy Comstock is director of Children’s Ministry of The United Methodist Church of the Resurrection in Leawood, Kansas, one of the fastest growing churches in the country. She has written this guidebook with “busy and hardworking people in mind,” people just like all the saints in congregations large and small who yearn to offer an exciting and vital ministry to the children in their congregation and community.

When the author asks a child why she has come to church, her little friend answers first. “I come to be with her because she is my best friend.” Then the first girl adds: “I come to see my friends and what we do is fun. I also like learning about God.” As the author observes, she “defines today’s children and their three areas of need. Children today want relationships and experiences, and they are interested in spiritual things. We must focus on meeting those three needs.”

Most congregations recognize the vital importance of an inviting and faithful program for children. This little book puts that longing at the heart of the church’s mission and ministry and equips disciples to make it happen in their own setting.

A short guidebook, this is a treasure trove of ideas, programs and inspiration for vital children’s ministry in congregations of all sizes and means. At only 64 pages, it is an affordable resource for churches with little or no budget. But, the author’s experience and faith shine through. Even people who have not previously considered a call to children’s ministry in their congregation might be inspired to jump in.

Each short chapter begins with a one-paragraph to one-page framework or illustration, which leads right into practical ideas—tips, cautions, and cost-cutting innovations. Written in a simple, direct and engaging style, the “can do” mentality of the author is readily accessible and readily put into practice.

The tone and perspective of the book, designed to share ideas, ignite creativity, boost confidence and equip disciples “immediately” has obvious spillover into all areas of congregational ministry based in spiritual gifts and equipping disciples.

Grounded in the assurance of God’s call to faithful and talented people, Comstock offers support, tips, ideas, encouragement and humor for the creation and expansion of vital ministries for and with children. As followers of the One who blessed children and lifted them up as a model of kingdom living and faith, pastors, lay leadership committees and all workers with children will be inspired and encouraged by this book.
