Triangular Teaching by Barbara Bruce
Offering a new paradigm for teaching scripture to adults, Barbara Bruce in Triangular Teaching reminds the reader that adults learn only what they choose to learn. From this premise, the author precedes to give practical examples of how a teacher can motivate and engage students to desire biblical knowledge. The goal of triangular teaching is to allow the “living Word” to come back to life for individuals and groups.
The text includes twenty-three chapters of actual lessons from the New Testament, as well as introductory chapters explaining the three areas of knowledge (multiple intelligence theory, creative and critical thinking, and the physical process) which compose the sides of this equilateral triangular for teaching. With these areas defined, the author then substantiates why to be mindful of these in teaching and how to use the knowledge.
In using this tool for teaching, I found it accessible and useful to engage the variety of proposed learning styles. Each lesson is complete with a list of materials needed, strategies, scripture, life application, reflection comments and a closing prayer. The material seems to be easily adaptable to a range of teaching settings and sizes. However, I found that the “meat” of the lessons needed to be pulled from other sources, i.e. commentaries, dictionaries, histories, and interjected into the techniques offered. In general this seems to be a helpful resource of a creative and viable way to reach and engage adults in teaching scripture.
